William Hicks was born 1755 in Virginia. He was a Revolutionary War soldier. William served in the 12th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Army from Sept. 20, 1776, to 1778. He also served in the Second Virginia detachment from 1780 to Jan. 17,1782, when he was discharged as a corporal. He married Mary Swanger (Swango) Jan. 2, 1784.William and Mary first lived in Garrard Co. Kentucky and then moved to Fayette Co., Kentucky and then back to Garrard Co., Kentucky. William died Dec. 19, 1822, in Garrard Co., Kentucky, and Mary died Aug. 24, 1847, in Jessamine. They had eight children.
The first one died at age three months.
Moses Hicks, second child of William and Mary Hicks, was born Sept. 2, 1786, and married Lucy Alcorn, daughter of Robert and Susannah Turpin Welch Alcom, April 16, 1811, in Fayette Co., Kentucky
Abraham Hicks, third child of William and Mary Hicks, was born Sept. 30, 1788, and married Patsy Wood July 1,1815, in Fayette Co., Kentucky Abraham and Patsy Hicks were the parents of Thomas, John, and Armstrong Hicks.
Sophia Hicks, daughter of William and Mary Hicks was born Sept. 20, 1790, and married Edward Combs. They were the parents of Jermiah, W. B., and George Combs.
Samuel Hicks, fifth child of William and Mary Hicks, was born Jan. 16, 1793, and married Fannie Cox, June 17,1813, in Fayette Co. Samuel died April 6,1861, and Fannie died Nov. 27,1882; both Samuel and Fannie are buried in the Nicholas Cemetery in Grant Co.
William Hicks, Jr., son of William and Mary was born Dec. 4, 1794, and married Rebecca Alcorn, daughter of Robert and Susannah Turpin Welch Alcorn, Jan. 10, 1815, in Fayette Co., Kentucky. William and Rebecca owned two and one-half acres of land in Jessamine and this was where his mother had lived. William and Rebecca lived in Fayette, Gallatin, Jessamine, and Harrison counties in Kentucky. They were the parents of Rice, Alfred, George, Julia and Emily Hicks. William Hicks Jr. served in the War of 1812. He enlisted under the name William Hix. William died March 12, 1868, and Rebecca died July 17, 1875.
Abigail Hicks, seventh child of William and Mary Hicks, was born May 20, 1796, and married George Gorman, son of Abraham Gorman Sr, Aug. 2,1813, in Fayette Co. Kentucky. George died Aug. 23, 1872, and both he and Abigail are buried in the Corman Cemetery, Bethel Pike, Jessamine Co., Kentucky. They were the parents of Abram, WIlliam, George J., James Mitchell, Henry Harden, Harrison, Issac, Jefferson, John and Conrad
Mary Hicks, eighth child of William and Mary Hicks, married Benjamin Goforth, Feb. 11, 1832, in Jessamine Co., Kentucky. They had a son, William and a daughter, Mary Jane. Mary Jane Goforth, daughter of Mary Hicks and Benjamin Goforth, married Joseph Gorman Jan. 14, 1851, in Jessamine Co., Kentucky.
